Registrations now open for 2026 North Queensland Games

Mackay is set to host regional Australia’s largest and most iconic multi-sport event, with the 2026 Mackay North Queensland Games to be held from May 1 to May 4, 2026.

Running since 1984, The North Queensland Games will bring together thousands of athletes, officials and supporters from across the region, celebrating grassroots sport, community pride and friendly rivalry across a diverse program of sporting events.

Delivered by the North Queensland Sports Foundation (NQSF) in partnership with Mackay Regional Council along with local businesses and sporting organisations, the Games continue a proud legacy spanning more than four decades, providing accessible pathways for athletes of all ages and abilities.

Mackay Region Councillor Ash-Lee Johnson said the North Queensland Games was a fantastic opportunity for Mackay.

“Not only will it bring thousands of visitors to our city, but it will also highlight Mackay as a premier sporting destination in North Queensland,” Cr Johnson said.

“The Games will inspire athletes of all ages across our region,” she said.

“We’re proud to provide a stage where competitors can challenge themselves, create memories and contribute to a legacy of sport in Mackay.”

The official media launch of the 2026 Mackay North Queensland Games took place Monday, February 2, marking less than 100 days until the Opening Ceremony and the beginning of the final countdown to the Games.

NQSF Chief Executive Officer Alexander Fisher said the excitement was building as the region prepared to welcome competitors from across North Queensland.

“The North Queensland Sports Foundation is very excited to be less than 100 days away from the Opening Ceremony for the 2026 Mackay North Queensland Games,” the CEO said.

“We all know that our region punches above its weight in sporting competition – and I’m proud to be launching our Games alongside Mackay’s own World Champion Boxer Liam Paro and Olympic Gold Medallist Natalie Cook, who competed in our Games in the year 2000, just months before securing that Gold Medal,” he said.

The CEO said the Games continued to play a critical role in athlete development, community connection and regional pride.

“We’re even sponsored by North Queensland Olympian Tori West’s athletic performance app PEAK^, supporting grassroots athletes to become their best selves,” he said.

“Of course, sport is not only about competition – it’s about having fun, trying your best and growing your community – and we’re excited to deliver a number of events through the region in May, from social beach volleyball through to Boxing Queensland’s Under 19 State Titles.”

The North Queensland Games feature a wide range of sports, including Olympic and non-Olympic disciplines, team and individual sports, and social and competitive formats, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The 2026 Games are expected to deliver strong social and economic benefits to the Mackay region, while reinforcing North Queensland’s reputation as a powerhouse of sporting talent and community spirit.

The North Queensland Sports Foundation is proudly supported by the Queensland Government, whose continued investment in regional sport plays a vital role in strengthening community participation, athlete development and major event delivery across North Queensland.
